Al-Shabaab’s ideology, Salafi jihadism, is deeply entrenched in a radical interpretation of Sunni Islam. At its core is the fervent aspiration to institute an Islamic state in Somalia governed by a stringent application of Sharia, Islamic law based on the Quran.
